Common fault

Why is my wine cooler not holding temperature?

Short answer

Get a thermometer in with the bottles before you trust the panel, because an inland cabinet and its own display stop agreeing somewhere around August. Wine storage drifts quietly, and a display still showing its setpoint on a cabinet sitting several degrees warmer is the normal way this fault presents itself. On a dual-zone unit, one zone that holds while the other climbs means the sealed system is fine and that zone's own evaporator or fan is not. A whole cabinet that has crept up in an inland house in August is more often a condenser that cannot reject heat into a hot room.

The room matters more here than in most places. A wine cabinet built into a west-facing wall, or into a bar area or pantry that nobody air-conditions, is being asked to hold cellar temperature against a space that gets genuinely hot every afternoon. It will manage that in April and lose it in August. The unit is not necessarily faulty; its condenser may simply be out of margin, and cleaning the coil and opening up the airflow around the cabinet recovers more of these calls than a part does.

Condensation inside the glass door is a separate fault that regularly gets confused with this one. That is the door seal or the pane heater rather than the cooling system, and during a humid stretch it can appear on a cabinet that is holding temperature perfectly well.

On the visit we check zone by zone with a probe at bottle level, look at the condenser and the whole airflow path around the cabinet, test the fan and the evaporator on the zone that is drifting, and check the seal along its length. A working zone does half the diagnosis for us: it proves the compressor and narrows the repair down to one circuit.

If that matches what your appliance is doing, say so when you call — it tells us which parts to bring, and most of these are finished in one visit.
