If the supply is slow, silted or scaled, the cubes come out hollow, small or half formed and the machine itself has done nothing wrong. Well systems add a variable a city house does not have. Pressure at the kitchen depends on where the pump is in its cycle, so an ice maker can fill correctly at seven in the morning and short-fill at six in the evening with the irrigation running. That produces an intermittent fault no bench test will ever reproduce, and it is the reason we ask what the water source is before anybody opens a toolbox.

Hard water does the slower damage. Mineral builds on the fill tube, across the mold and around the valve seat, and the first symptom is not a failure but a change in shape: cubes that come out cloudy, fuse into a slab, or refuse to release cleanly and jam the ejector arm. By the time a module is straining against scaled ice, the module is what gets blamed. We descale and check the water first, and if the module genuinely is finished you get told with the reading that proves it.

Undercounter ice machines have their own inland problem. They sit in closed cabinetry with a condenser breathing through a narrow grille, and in a hot kitchen production simply falls off. Half the ice, no fault code, nothing actually broken. Airflow and a proper condenser cleaning settle more of those calls than parts do.
