Common fault
What is the loud humming or rattling from my refrigerator?
Short answer
A new noise from a built-in almost always comes from behind the grille rather than from inside the cabinet. The condenser fan is the usual source: it rattles when it picks up debris and it whines when the bearing starts to go, and inland it runs far more hours per summer than the same fan does on the coast. Compressor mounts harden with age and hum through the cabinetry, which is annoying rather than urgent. The reason not to wait is that a fan left to seize stops the unit rejecting heat, and at that point it is no longer a fan repair.
Describe the noise with two details and we can usually name it before we arrive. First, where it is coming from: top grille, bottom grille, or inside the box. Second, whether it is constant or comes and goes with the cooling cycle. A rattle that appears for a minute and stops is a fan blade touching something. A steady drone that has grown louder over months is a bearing or a set of mounts.
Dust and grit are why this comes up more often here. A condenser fan that spends its life pulling air off a decomposed granite driveway wears its bearing faster than one in a sealed suburban kitchen, and anything the fan draws in, insulation, a leaf, a piece of shipping foam nobody ever removed, ends up against the blade.
Noise from inside the compartment is a different fault and worth mentioning separately when you call. An evaporator fan blade catching ice is a defrost problem announcing itself early, and that is a far better stage to catch it at than the warm-food stage a month later.
If that matches what your appliance is doing, say so when you call — it tells us which parts to bring, and most of these are finished in one visit.
